DragonSword: Awakening How to Upgrade Heroes — Level, Breakthrough, Skills & Awakening
Last updated: July 2026
Four independent upgrade systems — Combat Texts, Breakthrough caps, Record of Battle skill levels, and six-tier Awakening — explained with DPS-first priority order.
Four Independent Upgrade Systems
Hero power in DragonSword: Awakening comes from four systems that do not automatically sync — character level from Combat Texts, stat caps from Breakthrough, ability ranks from Record of Battle, and long-term spikes from Awakening. Weapon Karma sits adjacent on gear rather than the hero sheet but multiplies every system above; read the Karma System and Ascension guide for duplicate farming via the Daily Regional Missions routine. This guide explains what each system does, where materials come from, and which order maximizes DPS for your primary damage dealer first.
Combat Texts — Base Character Level
Combat Texts are consumable books that grant hero experience independent of story progression. You earn them from Regional Mission dailies, story rewards, and scattered chests across Orbis. Feed Combat Texts to your active trio before bench heroes — level raises base HP, attack, and defense that every other system scales from. There is no shared account-wide level; each hero levels individually. If a newly recruited Exchange pick from Fate's Invitation joins underleveled, backlog Combat Texts before pushing Breakthrough on your main.
Breakthrough — Raising the Level Cap to 80
Breakthrough raises a hero's maximum level ceiling in tiers until the launch cap of level 80. Each Breakthrough consumes specific regional materials and gold — often overlapping with Regional Mission drops like Forging Molds and medals. You cannot Combat Text past an unbroken cap; hitting a level wall means Breakthrough is your gate, not more XP books. Prioritize Breakthrough on your main DPS first, then supports who die frequently in World Boss attempts. Support survival matters, but stalled DPS extends every fight and wastes consumables on the Reawakened Dragon and Hunt replays alike.
Record of Battle — Skill Levels from Hunts
Record of Battle tracks individual skill upgrades for each hero ability slot. Skill Scrolls from Regional Missions feed early ranks; past roughly level 20 skill tiers, Hunts become the efficient source — replay story bosses on higher difficulties for scroll bundles and related mats. See the Endgame Hunts & Raids guide for Hunt unlock timing and co-op parity. Upgrade skills that define your rotation — Signal Skills, Break applicators, and Switching Signal enablers — before cosmetic passives. Validate which abilities your Team Builder comp actually fires each rotation; over-investing in benched hero skills delays team-wide clear speed.
Karma — Weapon Power Linked to Heroes
Although Karma equips on weapons, it is the primary gear multiplier for hero damage. Basic Karma ascends via duplicates from World Boss dailies; Exclusive Karma adds kit-specific modifiers tied to individual heroes. Equip and ascend Karma on your main DPS weapon before alt roles. Dismantle unwanted Exclusive pieces for exchange fragments at Skyspire Rock when you will never slot them — hoarding duplicates without ascension stalls inventory and obscures bottlenecks. Craft and reforge base weapon stats using Forging Molds from dailies; details on set bonuses and Stat Grinder costs live on the Equipment page.
Awakening — Six Tiers and Stigma Stones
Awakening spans six tiers per hero, each requiring a Stigma Awakened Stone purchased with 200 Fragment of Sacred Light at the appropriate vendor. Farm Sacred Light from exploration chests, regional mini-bosses, and Sudden Missions covered in the daily routine guide. Full six-tier Awakening on one hero is a long-term project — thousands of fragments total — so commit to a main DPS or a support you never bench before spreading stones across the roster. Awakening bonuses stack with Breakthrough stats and Karma ascension; they do not replace skill levels from Record of Battle.
Priority Order — DPS First, Supports Second
Follow this sequence for each new hero promoted to active duty: (1) Combat Text to current Breakthrough cap. (2) Breakthrough tiers until level 80 path is open or you hit the next material wall. (3) Record of Battle on rotation-critical skills to Hunt-supported levels. (4) Karma duplicate ascension on equipped weapon. (5) Awakening tiers one and two on your main DPS before tier three on supports. Deviating is fine for survival bottlenecks — if World Bosses one-shot you, bump healer Breakthrough early — but default DPS-first minimizes time-to-clear on every content layer including Hunts and World Boss rotations.
Common Mistakes
Spreading Combat Texts evenly across nineteen heroes before maxing one trio wastes daily income. Ignoring Breakthrough while feeding XP books hits invisible walls and feels like bad drop rates. Maxing Record of Battle on passive skills before Signal Skills yields pretty numbers without faster boss kills. Awakening bench heroes while your main lacks tier-one stones delays Sacred Light ROI. Finally, upgrading gear without ailment synergy — read Signal Skills & Tag Combos — produces inflated stats that still fail Switching Signal checks against Super Armor elites.
Checklist After Patch 1.0.3
Ensure Patch 1.0.3 is installed so World Boss and Sudden Mission resets align with your daily farming block — Karma duplicate income depends on that schedule. After updating, re-evaluate your main DPS against the priority list above, run one Hunt tier if skills sit below 20, and cross-check equipment templates on the Builds hub.
